Cookies
There is something undeniably comforting about a classic sugar cookie, and when brown butter enters the picture, it takes that comfort to an entirely new level. These brown butter sugar cookies are soft, flavorful, and lightly crisp around the edges, with a depth of flavor that feels warm and nostalgic. Finished with a silky brown butter frosting, they are the kind of treat that disappears quickly and always earns recipe requests.
This recipe is inspired by one of my favorite brown butter sugar cookie bases, topped with a rich and creamy brown butter frosting that adds just the right amount of sweetness. Together, they create a cookie that feels simple yet special, making them perfect for gatherings, gifting, or enjoying with a quiet cup of coffee.
• 1 cup unsalted butter
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 1/4 cup light brown sugar
• 1 large egg, room temperature
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 3/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 cup unsalted butter
• 2 cups powdered sugar
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 2 to 4 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
• Pinch of salt
Place butter in a light colored saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until the butter melts, foams, and then develops golden brown flecks at the bottom of the pan with a nutty aroma. Remove from heat immediately and transfer to a heat safe bowl to cool slightly before using.
Brown the butter and allow it to cool until warm but not hot
Preheat oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper
In a large bowl, mix the browned butter with granulated sugar and brown sugar until smooth
Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until fully combined
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt
Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms
Scoop dough into 1 1/2 tablespoon sized balls and place on prepared baking sheets
Bake for 9 to 11 minutes, until edges are lightly golden and centers are just set
Allow cookies to cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely
Brown the butter and let it cool slightly
In a bowl, mix browned butter with powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt
Slowly add milk or cream, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency
Once cookies are completely cooled, spread frosting generously over each cookie. Keep the frosting rustic for a cozy homemade look or smooth it out for a more polished finish.
Cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerated for up to 5 days.
